This is an outright stupid thing imo and puts unnecessary emphasis on a single otherwise mid-tier crew member's survival. Same goes for the Captain mechanic where if the captain of your crew dies you LOSE THE GAME.

It just doesn't really feel like a good strategic piece to the existing FTL gameplay puzzle. There's honestly no strategy to this mechanic since you just spam your abilities as soon as the battle starts. Crew Abilities would be better suited to augmentations like FTL had, active or passive modifiers that should be ship-based so that when (and in this game it's a WHEN) that Shield Specialist dies you don't lose half your max total shield value for potentially the rest of the game. Maybe it's because crew abilities are EXTREMELY POWERFUL and NECESSARY for success, yet just like FTL you could lose a crewmember to some bad RNG in an instant. Same goes for new ships, of which there seems to only be a handful that even after 10 runs I have no idea how to begin the process of unlocking and the starter Kestral equivalent is starting to get stale.Ĭrew Abilities is another new mechanic and one I dislike immensely as it feels unbalanced in a way that's difficult to properly define. New weapons are unlocked as you play, which I don't mind but am a little confused on how exactly they're unlocked. You can (and very often will) have multiple instances of combat in the same system. There are some changes to the gameplay, such as the different missile types and supplies system adding another layer of management. And although they copied the mantismen basically 1:1 the ship designs, other aliens and backgrounds are pretty cool. It might be a clone but they did their best to make their own universe interesting. It imitates in the important ways yet changes the formula enough to no longer feel as balanced.Īt this point I'm only a handful of hours in but I can tell there's some real talent, attention and affection put into the game. So does this game iterate? Or is it just an imitation?įTL is in my Top 3 Games I've Ever Played personally so I hope there's some credibility when I say Trigun is FTL: Awkward Edition. Taking another game's mechanics and iterating or adding a new twist is the basis for thousands of games. Same subsystems, system hazards, similar racial archetypes, same gameplay. Mechanics-wise this is a COPY and is 90% the same. Now what you might not understand yet is they aren't kidding. If you've read other reviews, you'll see a lot of comparisons to FTL and that this is an 'FTL Clone'.
